Data overview — How to Import Your ChatGPT Memory into Claude
Claude is built by Anthropic with a focus on safety research, making it the preferred choice for regulated industries.

Why You'd Want to Do This

ChatGPT memory stores your preferences, projects, and context after months of use. If you're switching to — or adding — Claude, you don't want to start from scratch.

Here's how to transfer it.

Step 1: Export Your ChatGPT Memory

  1. Open ChatGPT → Settings → Data Controls
  2. Click Export data
  3. Wait for the email from OpenAI (usually < 1 hour)
  4. Download the ZIP → open memory.json

The file contains all saved memories in plain text format.

Step 2: Structure Your Context for Claude

Claude doesn't have a direct "import" button. Instead, create a system prompt or opening message that contains your key preferences:

My context:
- I'm a Shopify developer building embedded apps
- I prefer TypeScript over JavaScript
- I use React + Node.js + PostgreSQL (Neon)
- I'm working on: [project name]
- Communication style: direct, technical, no fluff

Step 3: Use Claude's Memory System

Claude.ai now has persistent memory. To add your context:

  1. Start a conversation
  2. Say: "Please remember the following about me: [paste your context]"
  3. Claude will store this across future sessions

What Transfers Well

Works Great Doesn't Transfer
Project context Conversation history
Preferences File attachments
Technical stack Custom GPTs
Communication style Plugins/tools

Pro Tip: Use Both

Many power users run Claude for deep analysis and ChatGPT for quick tasks. You don't have to choose. Maintain separate context files for each tool and paste them in when you start a session.

💡 Takes 15 minutes to set up. Saves hours of re-explaining your context every session.
